Strain
Strain is a measure of deformation representing the relative change in length of a material when subjected to stress. It’s a dimensionless quantity, often symbolized by the Greek letter ε (epsilon), and calculated as:
where:
- l is the final length of the material after deformation,
- l0 is the original length before deformation.
Strain describes how much a material stretches or compresses under an applied force, and is a fundamental concept in mechanical engineering and materials science, particularly in analyzing the mechanical behavior of materials.
